School Farm in Nairobi

20 miles south of Nairobi on the Maasia plains is the first Steiner school in East Africa. Now with 20 acres, there are 393 primary pupils, of which 120 board at the school. The school's biodynamic farm plays an integral role in the children's education and is part of their curriculum. The school would like to expand the farm facilities by building a cow shed, farmhouse and classrooms next to their vegetable garden. 12 paddocks will also be created, practising agroforestry methods and the growing of grasses to support livestock fodder, the soil and wildlife. This will be an established centre for children to learn and experience agriculture and gardening. All the buildings are designed to harvest rainfall into proposed built in tanks, and to use solar energy. The farm will provide high quality biodynamic food and milk for the pupils, raise awareness and care for the environment, train farmers and the community, supply biodynamic preparations, and facilitate research work to be able to adapt to the changing climate and droughts.
